DTF Printing Explained — What It Is and When to Use It

A New Way to Put Graphics on Fabric

DTF — direct-to-film — is one of the newest and most versatile decoration methods available, and it's changing what's possible for small custom apparel orders. At Kraft Life, we offer DTF printing as part of our full-service apparel decoration lineup. Here's what it is, how it works, and when it's the right choice.

How DTF Printing Works

DTF doesn't print directly onto the garment — it prints onto a special polyester film first. The process works like this:

  1. Your design is printed onto a PET film using water-based inks
  2. A hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink
  3. The film is cured in an oven to set the adhesive
  4. The ready-to-press transfer is applied to the garment using a heat press
  5. The film is peeled away, leaving a fully bonded, soft-hand print

DTF vs. Screen Printing vs. Embroidery

Each method has its place. Here's a quick comparison:

Method Best For Color Limit Minimum Order
DTF Full-color, photo-realistic designs; any fabric Unlimited 1 piece
Screen Print Large runs, simple designs on light garments 1–6 spot colors Usually 24–48 pcs
Embroidery Professional logos, structured fabric (hats, polos) Thread colors 1 piece at Kraft Life

What Can Be DTF Printed?

DTF transfers bond well to cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and even leather. They can be applied to t-shirts, hoodies, hats (on the flat front panel), bags, and most flat-surface items. The result is a smooth, full-color print with good stretch resistance and wash durability.

When to Choose DTF

  • Your design has gradients, fine lines, or photography
  • You need a small run (even just 1–3 pieces)
  • You need a full-color graphic on a dark or colored garment
  • You need a quick turnaround
